Description

KAOKOVELD-NAMIBIA 3: The Kaokoveld is one of the least inhabited areas in Namibia, stretching from the coastal desert plain and rising slowly into a wild and rugged landscape. Historically, the Kaokoveld was split into two areas: Damaraland in the south, and Kaokoland in the north, though it is all now officially known as the Kunene region. The northern parts of the Kaokoveld have very low human populations. It is also home to the famous desert elephants, which were thought to be a subspecies of the African elephant, with extra long legs and an ability to withstand drought. Though now not thought to be the case, the desert elephants are adept at surviving in the driest of areas, with an amazing knowledge of the few water sources that do exist.
